Laser gum recontouring can correct a variety of cosmetic dental issues including:
- Gums that appear uneven
- Gummy smile
- Illusion that teeth appear too short, crooked, or uneven
- Gum tissue that results in inflammation or redness
- Receding gums
- Treatment for gum disease
Better results with advanced technology
At Triangle Periodontics, we use dental laser technology when recontouring gums. The PerioLase® (LANAP) laser results in an easier procedure with more precision, and a safer and quicker recovery than compared to traditional gum grafting surgery that involves using a scalpel and sutures.
Previously, gum recontouring has been conducted by using a scalpel to remove healthy tissue from elsewhere inside of the patient’s mouth. In some cases, donor tissue may be used. Then, the tissue is sutured into place, in the precise areas needing treatment. Although this surgical method is still proven effective, it often results in a lengthy recovery with a much higher rate of discomfort. Plus, only a few teeth can be treated at a time as a result of the lengthy recovery; bleeding both during and after the procedure is likely, and the risk of infection is higher.
When Dr. Washington uses the PerioLase® dental laser for gum recontouring, it results in the following benefits:
- Faster treatment – the laser works much faster than using a scalpel
- Precision – less tissue has to be removed
- Cauterizes as it goes – this results in less bleeding during and after procedure, resulting in a much easier recovery
- Kills bacteria on the spot – less risk of infection
- Less discomfort both during and after procedure
- Quicker recovery time – patients often report minimal discomfort or swelling
- Can treat multiple areas at once
